The 19th century French novelist George Sand was born a Baronness. She married young and had two children after which she divorced her husband. She began wearing men's clothing and smoking a pipe in public which led to her being stripped of her royal title and privileges. She authored many novels as well as plays and literary criticism. Following her divorce, she was involved in several relationships with men and one, albeit unacknowledged by Sand, relationship with a woman, the actress Marie Dorval.
